“From 75 year old recipes passed down through the family or a new recipe made up on the spot… nothing makes me happier when customers come back again and again to say how nice it is.”
“Family business, it’s not just about blood, it’s the staff and customers that make it an even
bigger family business.”
The Farm Bakery
At 17 Colyn was asked to help out at his aunt's and uncle's bakery in Amble during the summer season. By September that year Colyn was enrolling into Northumbria Bakery College. He worked various shifts in the bakery and attended college on his day off to study Bakery and Confectionery for four years.
In 1992 Colyn married Christine (the Saturday girl), and spent a further six years working at the bakery in Amble, before progressing to a Shift Manager's role at an extremely popular local bakery. After a year Colyn was offered a Bakery Manager's position at a supermarket in his hometown, which coincided with the birth of his daughter, Jasmine.
Five years passed, and with the addition of a son (Jamie), Colyn was eager to begin a new chapter in his life and opened his own bakery at Lee Moor Farm, Rennington with the intention of creating a quality product. The bakery was just what people needed and overnight gained a vast customer portfolio delivering to numerous outlets including sandwich shops, and
local businesses. During this time he rapidly expanded his team from one baker to ten and within a short period of time he was supplying over fifty local customers. It became apparent that the bakery needed it's own outlet and it began producing products to sell from the local markets in Amble and Alnwick as well as a few others.
It soon became apparent there was a high demand for cakes with a personal touch, and Colyn needed bigger premises to enable productivity. In 2017 the second Farm Bakery shop opened in Alnwick, named The Farm Cakery. This was a play on words as it was intended to sell only cakes. But it was a substantially bigger shop so it was decided to make it a “whole bakery experience” and sell breads, rolls, pastries, morning goods, savouries, sandwiches and not forgetting the all-important cakes and confectionery.
Now we are into the next chapter. Jasmine is Manager and has her hands in literally everything, from making something new and different every week to promoting on various platforms including social media. She has helped the bakery achieve recognition via awards won in 2019 for Retail Bakery of the Year in Northumberland and in the North East. We are constantly trying to keep ahead of the game by proactively making and baking. This ensures we will continue to be successful for generations to come.
